2018 Southold Opera Singing Competition
The Southold Opera is happy to announce its first Competition for Opera Singers! We welcome singers of various ages and abilities to sing their hearts out for a chance to win prizes and perform at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall! Our elite panel features international stars from the Metropolitan Opera.
How it works:
1. You submit your material as described below in the Divisions and Eligibility section
2. You will receive an invitation allowing you to reserve your spot your first round in Southold or Manhattan (as you will have to specify in your submission)
3. You will be performing your first round at your preferred location: arrive 15 minutes earlier with 2 copies of each selection, and your application fee (by check payable to Southold Opera or cash), you will be notified by email whether or not you have made it to the next round.
4. If you have been selected, you will participate in the Semi-Final Round. (The Southold applicants will be notified by 4pm on the same day of the first round.)
5. The Finalists selected will be notified on Friday, December 7 by email before 2pm.
6. Finalists will perform at the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall at 8pm.
When and Where:
Applicants may choose if they would like to perform their first round and semi-final rounds in either our Southold Opera on Long Island location or Manhattan Location.
Manhattan Location:
First Round in Manhattan
Wednesday, December 5 from 4-9pm
Semi-Finals in Manhattan
Thursday, December 6 from 4-8pm
Southold Opera Location:
First Round and Semi-Final Round in Southold Opera House
Saturday, December 1 from 12-6pm
Walk-ins are not accepted. No one will be permitted to audition without prior registration by our midnight deadline on Sunday, December 2.
All singers must be available for the entire day in case they are called back for the semi-final round.
Finals for both locations will all held in Manhattan in front a live audience
Saturday, December 8 at 8pm at Carnegie Hall in the Weill Hall
Divisions and Eligibility:
Junior Singers 13-19 years old
(proof of age required at the audition)
Junior Singers must prepare 2 songs, at least 1 in the classical repertoire.
Winners will receive scholarships to study voice technique and masterclasses at one of the locations of the Southold Opera School of Music (Southold, Long Island and Manhattan). The application fee is $25.

1. A short bio (a brief narrative detailing your work and experience in opera and singing up to this point) describing their involvement in music and singing no more than 100 words
2. A picture to be used for promotional materials
3. You must prepare 2 selections and at least 1 must be from the classical repertoire
4. Please specify the division and location at which you would like to audition.
Deadline to submit for Southold applicants is Friday, November 30 at 12 noon.
Deadline to submit for Manhattan applicants is Sunday, December 2 at midnight.
Adult Amateurs 35 years old and up
(Proof of age required at the audition)
Amateur singers have not been paid to perform in the past 3 years.
Winners will receive scholarships to study voice technique and masterclasses at one of the locations of the Southold Opera School of Music (Southold, Long Island and Manhattan). The application fee is $30

Emerging Professionals 20-35 years old
(Proof of age required at the audition)
Emerging Professionals must prepare 2 opera arias in 2 different languages.
Winners will receive cash prizes, roles in the upcoming season of the Southold Opera, and paid performance at the Southold Opera New Year's Eve Gala. First prize winner will receive a featured recital at the Southold Opera. The application fee is $35.

Professional Opera Singers must prepare 2 opera arias in 2 different languages.
Winners will receive cash prizes, roles in the upcoming season of the Southold Opera, and paid performance at the Southold Opera New Year's Eve Gala. First prize winner will receive a featured recital at the Southold Opera. The application fee for Professionals is $35.
